Dr. Levy Brown is Vice President of Academic Affairs at Vance-Granville Community College. His area is responsible for providing a dynamic learning environment for students who wish to obtain a degree, certificate, or diploma. Further, he is responsible for providing leadership to a division which focuses on economic and workforce development and basic skills. He provides leadership to an area which employees over 100 full-time faculty members and well over 30 full-time staffers. Dr. Brown is an advocate for quality teaching and learning, student success, equity, diversity, professional growth, and partnership development. Dr. Brown’s professional background includes 15 years of higher education experience in advising, enrollment management, cultural programming, leadership development, strategic planning, student affairs, and teaching and learning. Prior to Vance-Granville Community College, Dr. Brown served as Dean of Arts and Sciences at Lenoir Community College, and Associate Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management at Brunswick Community College. He also served as Dean of Student Services at Lenoir Community College and Director of Cooperative Education and Secondary Alliances at Pitt Community College.
Dr. Brown is a Dr. Asa G. Hilliard III and Dr. Barbara A. Sizemore fellow. The fellows have committed to researching issues related to diversity and Blacks in higher education. The fellowship is sponsored by the American Education Research Association (AERA). Dr. Brown is a 2016 recipient of the East Carolina University 40 under 40 Leadership Award. One of his most proud accomplishments is his dissertation research, “An Examination of African American Leadership Practices and Upward Mobility within the North Carolina Community College System.” His new scholarly work has given him an opportunity to present at local and national meetings. However, Dr. Brown’s most proud work is his family.
